When to use
Use this when a receptionist or assistant is screening your call and you need the name of, and a route to, the person who actually owns the problem you solve.

Hi gatekeeper, this is your name from company. I am hoping you can point me in the right direction -- do you have a second?
I am trying to reach whoever looks after department, and rather than guess a name and get it wrong, I figured the smartest move was to just ask you directly.
I will be honest with you: this is not urgent and I am not trying to sneak past you. I help teams like yours with a specific problem, and I only want thirty seconds of the right person's time to see if it is even relevant.
Can I ask, who would be the best person for that, and are they around today?
If they are heads-down or you would rather I not put you on the spot, no problem at all -- I would just love the best way to reach decision maker.
If they are free, could you see whether they have meeting length now or later? If not, I will call back by timeframe -- whatever is easiest for you.
